Career

After completing her studies, Dr Akunyili worked as a hospital pharmacist and later as a university lecturer. She then joined the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in 1993 as a Deputy Director. In 2001, she was appointed as the Director-General of the agency, where she made significant changes in the agency's operations to ensure the safety and efficacy of food, drugs, and other regulated products in Nigeria.

Dr Akunyili's efforts in NAFDAC led to the seizure and destruction of counterfeit drugs worth millions of dollars, as well as the arrest and prosecution of several manufacturers of fake drugs. Her work also contributed to the reduction of the mortality rate from counterfeit drugs in Nigeria.

In 2006, Dr Akunyili was appointed as the Minister of Information and Communications by Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo. She served in this position until 2008 when she was appointed as the Minister of Health.
